Buzziton and the WEEE Regulations Policy
The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations were introduced to help reduce the environmental impact of electronic waste. In effect since July 1, 2007, these regulations seek to promote responsible handling and disposal of waste electrical and electronic equipment.
Goals of the WEEE Regulations:
– Minimize Electronic Waste: Reduce the volume of electrical and electronic waste sent to landfills.– Encourage Collection and Recycling: Support separate collection of WEEE, facilitating recycling and reuse.
– Promote Sustainable Disposal: Encourage sound environmental practices in the disposal of WEEE.
– Producer Responsibility: Ensure producers are accountable for the environmental impact of their products.
– Lifecycle Environmental Impact: Improve the environmental performance of those involved throughout the product lifecycle.
Environment Agency Guidelines
The WEEE Directive encourages householders to keep WEEE separate from general waste to facilitate recycling and the safe removal of hazardous materials. While it isn’t prohibited to dispose of WEEE with regular trash, householders are encouraged to use designated collection points. Local authorities and retailers may offer convenient recycling options, such as civic amenity sites or take-back facilities for electrical appliances.Householders can:
– Check with retailers if they offer take-back programs.– Drop off old electronic equipment at local amenity sites.
– Arrange for collection through local authorities (some offer free services, while others may charge).
– Request that retailers delivering new appliances collect the old equipment.
Under the Duty of Care, householders are required to use registered waste carriers or approved persons for WEEE disposal.
Buzziton Take-Back Service
As a responsible retailer, Buzziton provides a free take-back service for customers returning WEEE, especially when replacing it with new items from Buzziton. If a product has the WEEE symbol (a crossed-out wheeled bin logo), it qualifies as electrical or electronic equipment and is covered under the WEEE Regulations.Battery Recycling
In line with the Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations, Buzziton offers a free battery recycling service. Customers looking to dispose of portable batteries, such as those from laptops, can drop them off at designated collection bins.
